CURLS Summer School 2018: Dialogue on Gross National Happiness (GNH) – Dasho Karma Ura

Dialogue on Gross National Happiness (GNH) with Dasho Karma Ura.

Are happiness and wellbeing individual issues or are social and environmental conditions making impact on how we feel and how we act? Can we speak of “public happiness” and can we measure it? Does the GNH Index provide a guideline for policy decisions of government, the business sector and civil society? And is article 5 of the Constitution of Bhutan (2008)
“Every Bhutanese is a trustee of the Kingdom’s natural resources and environment (…)”
a pointer to the possibility of the commons as the most fundamental principle of Earth governance?

Dasho Karma Ura earned his undergraduate degree at Oxford University and his Masters in Philosophy of Economics from the University of Edinburgh. He worked for the Ministry of Planning for 12 years before becoming the President of the Centre for Bhutan Studies and Gross National Happiness (CBS & GNH) in 1999.
